The GAGE SC1A is a compact, double-acting steam engine. A slide valve is used to control the steam. The compact size is possible by using a "Scotch Yoke" drive between the piston and the crankshaft. A Scotch Yoke is also known as a slide crank. An eccentric driven yoke operates the valve. Using a yoke drive eliminates the length of the crosshead commonly used in steam engines.
The Scotch Yoke has greater frictional losses than a conventional crosshead-connecting rod arrangement, however, unless you are operating the engine under a heavy load, the difference is small. This engine is NON-reversing, but it may be assembled to run in either direction.
The SC1A requires a small set of screwdrivers, a pair of needle nose pliers and a small flat file for assembly.
